We have all heard of "White Man's Guilt," but there is also "Hindu Man's Guilt," which has been ingrained in our minds for ages and generations. Riots always make me think of the 1988 film Tamas, which was based on the same-named book by Bhisham Sahni and Govind Nihlani is the director.
Both Bhisham Sahni and Govind Nihlani, who were both born in Pakistan before it was divided, seems to have a soft spot in their hearts for the Muslim community there.
We are aware of how Communist and Leftist ideologies heavily influenced academia, the arts, and politics after Independence and even before.
In this movie, a Hindu man approaches a member of the scheduled cast community at the beginning of the film and requests a dead pig for a doctor's research. The following day, a very friendly Muslim neighborhood that had been pleased with volunteers cleaning their drains becomes hostile after learning that a pig has been thrown into their mosque. The movie investigates what transpired following the riot. Hindus are being saved by kind and caring Muslim families. Hindus incite hatred and violence toward Muslims. Near and dear betrayed Muslims, but Muslims "forced" to act venomous because of disappointment from Hindus.
Can you imagine how much this story has been drilled into our minds? THEY are always instigated to act the way they do. WE are acting with deliberate intentions and cold, calculated plans. Not a victim ever. The book did, however, win a Sahitya Academy award. Three National Awards were won by the film.
We are still experiencing the movie!
